Months before the release of Avatar 2: The Way of Water, Disney approached us to help them reimagine the Avater website as a hub that could support all of the upcoming films and integrate into their CMS system to streamline support for years to come. I led the team, working with key leaders at Disney and Lightstorm to build a destination to encapsulate the entire Avatar ecosystem.
Past iterations of Avatar.com were ephemeral, theatrical marketing sites built to support a single film. The was to be something entirely different. It would need to support multiple films for years to come, be updated to support modern web and accessiblity standards, and the design would need to work within Disney's existing CMS system.
That said, the site for this blockbuster franchise must not feel cookie-cutter or templated. We needed a site befitting the beautiful world of Pandora.
We captured the expansive world of Pandora in our UI through a system of custom icons and color.
These project was always about bringing the broader Avatar fanbase together in one place. Fans can find information, Film Scores, Na'vi Language tools and more all in an a11y accessible website.
As of 2023, the site has performed just as hoped. It supported the launch of Avatar 2: The Way of Water and has functioned as foundational web presence for the franchise moving forward.
